To determine if your sequences are applicable for SP-GenBank and to learn how to begin, see What You Should Expect – Overview. When you start a new submission, you will be guided through steps to select the correct workflow for your data, upload your sequence file, and provide other relevant information. Upon successful submission, each sequence will be processed as a separate GenBank record with its own accession number. 

Once you submit, post-submission progress with various statuses will be available under My submissions in the Submission Portal.  For more information, see the After Submission page. 

After you submit, GenBank will contact you to address problems with your submission. Often, you will be able to revise the submission in SP-GenBank without needing to start a new submission.   

The Submission Portal displays a list of submissions (under My submissions) that you or your group submitted. This includes submissions in other components of the Submission Portal, such as BioProject, BioSample, or SRA. Submissions made outside the Submission Portal (such as BankIt) are not listed. 

SP-GenBank is part of a unified submission system in NCBI Submission Portal. Submission Portal workflows share common design elements that provide familiar submission experiences. 

Within SP-GenBank, the submitters can access data-tailored workflows with enhanced help, tooltips, and documentation.  

Submitters can link related submissions from different SP-GenBank workflows under a common BioProject. SP-GenBank provides options for conveniently adding BioProject, BioSample, and SRA accessions during submission.   

Collaborate with colleagues on your submissions via Shared Submission Groups. 

Some data types are eligible for automated feature annotation, eliminating the need for you to apply features. See What You Should Expect – Features for more information.

SP-GenBank offers enhanced functionality and numerous improvements over the legacy BankIt tool.  These include data-tailored workflows, stored publications from previous submissions, interactive tables for entering source information, and redesigned feature annotation interface. 

Note for returning BankIt submitters: You should now use SP-GenBank for data previously submitted with BankIt. SP-GenBank currently serves submissions of FASTA-formatted sequences. Continue using BankIt if you want to submit alignment files (such as Nexus) until further notice.
